Mid-Atlantic Convocation April 2007 Newsletter
Dear #subname#:
After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.” Revelation 7:9-10
This picture from Revelation portrays a wonderful vision of all nations and people gathered around the throne of God, worshiping and praising Him. It is the culmination of the promise made to Abraham that all peoples on earth would be blessed through him.
A few weeks ago, I had the joy and privilege of attending the New Wineskins for Global Mission conference. It was, as always, wonderfully uplifting and inspiring. The first night set the tone for the conference, with the Rt. Rev. Derek Eaton, Assistant Bishop of Egypt, speaking on “Our God is a Missionary God.” He shared these startling statistics: every day there are 8,000 new Anglican believers and 90,000 new Christians of all traditions. Four hundred new Anglican churches are planted each week.
These are staggering statistics, especially in light of the figures for North America, where the Episcopal Church has lost a third of its members since the 1960s and now has less than 800,000 worshipers in church on Sunday. But how exciting and encouraging to see what the Lord can do through biblically faithful, mission-focused Anglicanism!
Throughout the conference we heard powerful testimonies from people on the front lines of mission work and were challenged to obey the Great Commission at home and abroad.
The theme of this newsletter is to share what the churches of our Convocation are doing in short-term missions. The great response to our request for information is so encouraging. If we have missed any, please send us the information (newsletter@acn-mac.org) and we will include them in next month’s newsletter. We will also look forward to your reports when you return. Let us keep these mission trips in our prayers.
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. 1Thessalonians 5:11
Yours in Christ,
John Guersney, Dean
Many of the Mid-Atlantic Convocation churches have upcoming mission trips. Here are just a few to encourage others to explore mission opportunities locally and abroad. Please pray protection and safe travel for all missionaries. Pray that the faithfulness of these servants of Christ would bring glory to God.
Church of the Word, Gainesville, VA
May 11-12, 2007: East Coast Battle Cry (Bristow, VA)
June 17-23, 2007: Schuylkill County, PA
July 1-12, 2007: Dodoma, Tanzania
July 13-22, 2007: St. Augustine, FL
The mission trip to Dodoma, Tanzania will be the church’s first mission outside the United States. Dan and Francine Thomas will be based in the home of Tanzania friends. They will visit a number of villages where Church of the Word’s financial support has been sent for emergency food, bicycles, Bibles and Bible school tuition. Dan and Francine will be ministering to seminarians and pastors on the subject of intercessory prayer. Please pray that the Holy Spirit would minister powerfully through Dan and Francine. Pray for good health for Francine, that nothing would prevent this trip from happening.
Youth from Church of the Word will have the opportunity to participate in three summer mission trips. The goal of East Coast Battle Cry is to help teens experience freedom for the first time. At this concert, they will learn how the culture is influencing them and then what God’s plan is for their life. They will leave the event on a path to becoming a true follower of Christ.
The middle school mission trip is to Schyulkill County, PA from June 17-23, 2007. The team will be joining many other church mission teams in a community outreach organized by “Youth Works” whose purpose is to provide life-changing, Christ-centered youth mission opportunities. The team will be given the opportunity to serve in a variety of ways, such as, providing an afternoon KidsClub, and minor home repair and painting projects. Evening activities during the week are designed to give the youth insight into the lives of local residents and the culture of the area.
The senior high /college trip is to St. Augustine, FL, from July 13-21, 2007. This is the third time Church of the Word will have partnered with a mission church (Christ the King) to conduct a VBS in a poor neighborhood. As they continue this ministry, the team hopes to expand the services offered. This year’s plans include providing a teen program alongside the children’s program. They are looking into a work project that will benefit the neighborhood.

Did You Know?
An introduction to
SOMA: Sharing of Ministries Abroad
SOMA is a mission agency called by God to serve the Anglican Communion and the worldwide Church: by building up and equipping the Body of Jesus Christ through the renewing power of the Holy Spirit for the transformation of individuals, churches and communities principally through short-term, cross-cultural missions.
Two of SOMA International’s strategic goals are: To conduct more collaborative team missions; to greatly increase participation by younger generations. The December mission to Accra Diocese in Ghana fulfilled both of these. SOMA composed a collaborative team between SOMA USA (composed mainly of young adults) and the new SOMA Nigeria, which included 6 young people and 6 Nigerians--surely fulfilling SOMA International’s goals. The two “main events” were a youth rally and healing service, followed up with teaching events for three nights in various Archdeaconries. The youth rally was spectacular, with some 600+ coming to the Lord after testimony by Archbishop and Mama Akrofi and the teaching of Bishop Ben and Mama Kwashi. Further, some 150+ gave themselves to the LORD for full-time ministry, either in ordained or lay capacity. Praise God!
From June 29-July 21, 2007, SOMA will lead a series of emotional healing seminars in the Rift Valley region of Tanzania. The vision for this project is healing through prayer from hurts in life. The goal for this project is to teach, train, and nurture soul-healing prayer ministry in Africa—first to Tanzania, then to East Africa and beyond. The teams conduct seminars, train leaders from the culture, and provide materials in the language of the people to enable the ministry to continue under local leadership once the SOMA missions are complete. Since 2003 SOMA-USA has conducted 17 seminars/training sessions in East Africa, 15 in Tanzania and two in Kenya. SOMA has raised the funds to publish 7000 copies of the Kiswahili Emotionally Free text.
